Smaller vessels are constantly coming alongside to transfer cargo
South of Manaus there are no maintained roads so all land transport is river based - unless you have a 4 wheel drive and a lot of patience. We travelled down to Porto Vehlo - a journey of 4 days. Here are some views of river life as we saw it.
The best thing about this part of the trip was getting up first thing in the morning and sitting on the upper deck with a pair of binoculars and watching the jungle wake up. Plenty of river dolphins too - although these are almost impossible to photograph.

More sodding bananas

It's not as scary as it looks!
Possibly Manicore
Accomodation on board was in hammocks (above). Ours are in the middle adjacent to a post (drunken Brasilians love to rock hammocks!) and well away from the toilets. You spend most of the trip in your hammock so it pays to get aboard early and claim a good spot.
The larger boat here is very similar to the one we are on
Rod, Anne & Libby
Small Clearings line both banks for most of the way
This is what happens to you if you drink Brasillian wine. Most if not all boats have a bar on the upper deck - the beer is better than the wine. The girl on the right is Libby from Australia.
