Manaus

Completed
in 1886 after 17 years of construction, the Teatro Amazonas is the largest
reminder of the opulence of Manaus during the rubber boom of the late
19th and early 20th centuries. No expense was spared in it's construction.

The
side entrance to the Opera House. Fans of the Hertzog movie Fitzcarraldo
are often seen running up the steps in dirty white suits! We know this
because we have seen them - well OK - we are some of them! |

Manaus has a very
exciting market area - plenty of strange fruit to be found there!

Right.
About 15km east of Manaus the Rio Negro (Black) flows into the Rio Solimões
or Amazon. The two rivers run alongside each other for about 6 km before
their waters finally mingle. We crossed this spot at night - and this
is a postcard. |

Left.
The botanical gardens offer a nice cool spot out of the city. Garden is
a bit of a misnomer - this is really a bit of jungle that has been walled
of - and not developed except for a few paths, walkways and viewing platforms.
Maybe there is a little more biodiversity here than you would find in
such a small area elsewhere. There are some monkeys and various parrots
wandering about - a lake with a lot of turtles, and a few other creatures. |
