Amazonas

5 Star treatment near Riberalta
After crossing into Bolivia the Amazon Basin started to live up to it's reputation. The roads were rougher and the sense of remoteness increased somewhat. The bus pictured on the left was taking us between Riberalta and Rurrenabaque - a journey of some 17 hours. This was the only stop - and was as far as we could tell the only place to stop.
5 Star facilities Amazon style. The food was OK but the pigs running around under the communal toilet were a bit off putting!

Rurrenabaque

Sunset at Rurrenabaque
We spent a couple of days relaxing in Rurrenabaque before embarking on the next 12 hour bus ride. Rurre boasts the first real hills we had seen since Venezuela and the usual spectacular sunsets. There is good jungle trekking to be had from here - arrange it when you arrive.

Houseplants!!

The most striking thing we noticed about the whole of the Amazon region was the colourfulness of the plants. Here a poinsettia tree growing in the street in Coroico.

This was our last stop before ascending into the high mountains along the (allegedly) most dangerous road in the world.
